About Richard
Hello, my name is Richard James, and I am the founder and owner of Cyrl Cymru salon in Aberystwyth, the first curly hair salon in Wales.
I have over 20 years’ experience in hairdressing and have worked in salons in Carmarthen, Swansea, and Bristol before settling in Aberystwyth.
My career highlight was to feature on S4C TV programme ‘Prynhawn da’ where I did maker over on six episodes.
Throughout my career I have attended regular training courses with the likes of Vidal Sassoon, Toni and Guy, L’Oréal, Wella, Trevor Sorbie, Mazzella and Palmer London and Gianni Scumaci.
I’ve always been interested in curly hair but never found anywhere to train me. In 2018 I heard that Matt from Spring salon Birmingham was offering a course on curly hair. I immediately booked the course that has changed my hairdressing career completely.
As I began offering curly hair service in Aberystwyth my clients started telling me how they and their friends would travel to Birmingham or London to get their curly cuts once a year.
That’s when I decided to come up with the name ‘Cyrl Cymru’ to let people in Wales know there is a curl specialist in Aberystwyth, and they didn’t need to travel so far.
During lockdown January 2021 I made the biggest decision in my hairdressing career by opening my very own salon.
Since opening my salon, I have been at full capacity with appointments, with people willing to travel from all over Wales and some from England as well.
