Cyrl Cymru Method

Here is my curly hair routine guide so that you can get the best out of your curls.

I recommend starting with using sulphate and silicone free products.

  1. Shampoo/Clarify – Wet your hair [down] until it is soaking wet. Apply sulphate free shampoo onto your scalp and massage the roots to get rid of build up. Then scrunch the mid length and ends with the shampoo to gently cleanse the curls, and then rinse out.
  2. Condition to Detangle – Take a generous amount of conditioner, apply to mid length and ends while avoiding the roots. Then detangle your hair with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Please note, if your hair has any dry patches at this point, just reapply more water to that area with conditioner.
  3. ‘Squish to Condish’ to deeply Moisturise – At this point make sure your hair is soaking wet, tip your head from side[s] to side, scrunching from ends to scalp, all over your head. The water should be a milky colour; the idea is to infuse your hair with water and conditioner in order to plump up the curls from the inside out.
  4. Seal with a Cool Water Rinse – Gently rinse out the conditioner with a cool stream of water. Depending on the hydration of your hair, you can leave some of the conditioner in the hair.
  5. Moisturise with Curl Cream – Again, depending on the level of the dryness of your hair, you can use curl cream to add a bit of extra moisture. This is applied in the same way as [you do with] the conditioner – by tipping your head from side to side and applying the curl cream from ends to mid length. If the hair has dried [up], you can use a water spray to wet the hair down again. Use the ‘squish to condish’ technique to create the curl pattern.
  6. Seal with a Gel – After working the moisture into your hair, you are going to want to seal it in with gel. Use a generous amount of gel, using the ‘squish to condish’ technique. Apply from ends to mid length, then run your fingers or wide tooth comb through to distribute the gel. Scrunch from ends to scalp creating your natural curl pattern.
  7. Drying – At this stage you can either let your hair dry naturally or dry with a diffuser. It is important to note that you should not touch your curls until your hair is fully dry, as this causes frizzing. Using a microfibre towel or a t-shirt, gently blot out any water and then diffuse in sections until a gel cast is formed. You can diffuse partially and let it air dry for the rest of the day.
  8. Scrunch out the Gel Cast – Once your hair is fully dried, the gel will form a hard cast. To soften it out simply scrunch from the ends to scalp around the head, with or without oil is optional – and fluff up the roots to put some lift into your curls.
